Climate Change: Global Manager

Climate Change: Global Manager is a touchscreen game that was developed by Leicester Museums and Galleries as part of an Arts Council England NPO funded project. The service’s digital team and Community Creates team worked with a group of young people aged 16 to 20 on the development, design and deployment of the project.

The group of young people was involved from the beginning of the project and generated the idea for an interactive game about climate change and its impact on our world. The visual design and gameplay development was guided by the group, who also took part in user testing and feedback.

Leicester Museums and Galleries worked with Friday Sundae, a creative digital production studio specialising in education, games and gamified content, on the game development. As part of the project, the group members were able to speak to and hear from professional designers working in the creative sector.

The game is played on a touchscreen tablet housed in a retro arcade-style kiosk, which was conceptualised by the group as a way to draw in an audience wherever the kiosk is placed.

The game is a fun way to help children, young people and families learn about the serious reality of climate change. During gameplay, players find out ways to help reduce their own impact on our planet by being in charge of a virtual Earth and all the lifestyle choices that people make in their everyday lives.

The game is aimed at children aged eight to 16 and has been placed at schools, museums, libraries, open days and festivals over two years. During this time, the game has been played by over 5,000 children and families.
