Support us - Museums Association

Support us

We have lots of ways in which you can support us and the work that we do. These range from giving money direct to help our charitable work, to volunteering your time and expertise to help our members develop their careers in museums.

Become a rep

We have 20 representatives from the four nations of the UK, who are a vital link with our members, keeping us in touch with what is happening on the ground across the sector.

As a rep, you’ll receive a free place at our annual conference, and at one of our two careers one-day conferences, Don’t Stop Me Now or Moving on Up. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to our policies and projects, and make connections with fellow museum professionals in your region.

Reps are encouraged to champion our work on appropriate national and regional committees and groups, and to act as a point of contact between us and our members.

Being a rep was an honour, and also a lot of fun. It led to me becoming an MA board member, and subsequently chair of the Ethics and Nations committees. So, if you get the chance – go for it. You’ll learn a lot and also be able to influence how the MA works in your nation.

We regularly advertise vacancies for reps on our Find a Job search, so keep an eye out for any in your area.

Stand for our board

Becoming a board member is a great opportunity to shape the future of the sector by helping us to develop new policy and initiatives, and lobby government and other stakeholders on behalf of museums.

Our board consists of 14 people, 8 of whom are elected. Each board member servces a three-year term. Candidates are individual members and their nominations are supported by two other members.

Every year we look for talented, motivated and creative people to help drive our strategic direction. Nominations to be elected are put forward in January every year.

Help at our events

Volunteering to steward at our conferences provide a valuable opportunity for those who are seeking to enter the sector or studying on museum courses. We recognise that volunteers play an important role towards providing a positive experience for attendees.

In return for working as part of the conference team, volunteer stewards will be offered free registration to the event including refreshments and lunch and every effort will be made to ensure they are able to attend as many of the plenary and concurrent sessions that are of particular interest to them.

When opportunities are available, details of how to volunteer can be found on our events pages.

Support professional development

Those undertaking the AMA have a mentor that works with them over 2-3 years. We have over 160 AMA mentors supporting our AMA candidates.

We support our mentors with initial training, email updates and mentor refresher sessions.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor in future, please email cpd@museumsassociation.org.
