What’s the best thing about being a freelancer?
The best thing about being a freelancer is being able to fit my family life around work and being able to shape the direction of my work. I have regular clients and I also look for new work that aligns with my interests and ethics.
What’s the hardest thing about being a freelancer?
The hardest thing about being a freelancer is the loneliness. I work with some fantastic teams within museums and galleries but it isn’t quite the same when you are a freelancer. It’s really important to carve out time to have coffees with peers and look out for free networking events. For example, I recently went to the M+H Show and I regularly attend online freelance catch ups hosted by the Group for Education in Museums (GEM).
What’s the one thing you wish people knew about freelance work?
The one thing I wish people knew about being freelance is that we need to get paid a decent daily rate as we don’t get sick pay or holiday pay, and we often end up working a bit extra to complete work set as a project fee. There’s also the time we have to put in to do our admin, taxes and tenders, etc. So don’t think we are asking for too much and compare what we earn with a full-time job!
