Our response to Scottish Parliament’s inquiry on Culture in Communities

The Museums Association has submitted a consultation response to the Scottish Parliament’s Constitution, Europe, External Affairs and Culture Committee’s inquiry on Culture in Communities.

Through its inquiry, the committee wants to understand:

  • How do national and local layers of government, along with the third sector, complement each other to ensure that communities have opportunities to take part in cultural activities?
  • How is unmet cultural need determined? And who decides this?
  • What does good ‘place-based’ cultural policy look like in practice?

In our response we have called for investment from national government to ensure that there is consistent culture provision across local authorities, as well as for culture and heritage to be considered essential amenities under the “20-minute neighbourhood” approach to planning.
