Our response to the Scottish Government’s International Culture Strategy Survey

The Museums Association has responded to the Scottish Government’s International Culture Strategy survey.

The Scottish Government has committed to developing a strategy to support the international aspirations and potential of Scotland’s culture sector. Through the survey the Scottish Government wants to understand views of all interested parties in this work to inform the shape the strategy takes.

In our response we have:

  • Highlighted the role of museums in communicating Scotland’s stories internationally and in engaging audiences in Scotland with cultural heritage from around the globe
  • Provided an overview of the key international activity museums undertake including object loans, touring exhibitions, restitution and repatriation, and working with communities of origin
  • Set out the barriers to museums developing international activity including lack of money, staff and confidence
  • Called for the strategy to consider the opportunities that international working offers for tackling the climate crisis
