Queer Britain

Stories + Strategies

Project goals:

  • Engage members from underrepresented LGBTQ+ community groups with history and STEM
  • Raise awareness of the importance and value of oral histories, specifically LGBTQ+ histories
  • Inspire positive changes across the GLAM and science centre sector to make spaces more inclusive of LGBTQ+ communities

At the core of this project is the recognition that the UK’s queer history is not fully told and much of it is at risk of being lost. Unheard stories are held by diverse LGBTQ+ people who often feel excluded from parts of our society, including within cultural institutions such as museums.

Partnering with Aunt Nell, an independent podcast production company, Queer Britain is working to increase recognition of oral histories as valuable and impactful research practice and resources – focusing on LGBTQ+ histories – and to reduce barriers against full inclusion of queer heritage throughout the cultural sector.

The project has opened up the opportunity for the recruitment of a new project manager and research coordinator. The team are reflective about the original project timeline, recognising that changes had to be made once this recruitment process began.

By ensuring that openness and inclusivity were central to their recruitment priorities, organisational procedures have been positively influenced and the project has attracted experienced and influential sector members.

The newly formed team is now on course with reaching out to LGBTQ+ hubs and potential partners across all four nations of the UK. Utilisation of the Mindsets + Missions network is proving to be an essential part of achieving this, which will only increase the diversity of voices and stories heard.

Through active participation of underrepresented groups, the project aims to disrupt traditional ideas of knowledge and heritage, empower people to see their stories as an essential part of history, and produce a high-profile podcast series that will democratise and diversify history.
