National Windrush Museum
Windrush Cultural Visualisation
Project goals:
- NWM and partner research to serve as a model for cultural diversity in museum digital visualisation
- Feasibility/testing of prototype leading to proposed large scale video wall outcomes and an impact study with Razorfish Ltd
- To evolve the concept of “doing museums differently”, cultural visualisation, and culture-hubs concepts for the subject area
This research project embraces innovation by focusing on collecting, preserving and visually showcasing Windrush narratives through cultural visualization.
Collaborating with Pentagram designers, the online Windrush museum will be enhanced with visually captivating elements. Leveraging cutting-edge technology and expertise from museum professionals, The Light Surgeons, RazorFish, and Google Arts and Culture technologies, the project pushes the boundaries of cultural representation.

Immersive experiences will be created, transcending traditional exhibitions – “doing museums differently”. Windrush culture image wall projections and an innovative portable digital/video wall will be created to promote the Windrush 75th anniversary, engaging diverse audiences and preserving Windrush legacies.
While not part of the original project plan, involvement in Mindsets + Missions has helped catalyse huge developments for NWM and the Windrush community which are significant for the museum sector.
In November 2023, a memorandum of understanding between NWM and Royal Museums Greenwich was signed in the House of Lords which will see the NWM permanently housed within the Royal Maritime Museum. This is a historical development in the representation of Windrush narratives and paves the way for further research and innovation.
