I undertook the AMA between 2011-2014.

I decided to do the AMA to help focus my career, and gain the skills I needed to progress within the museums sector. I felt that I was at a bit of a crossroads professionally, and I wasn’t sure where I wanted my career to go.

I was attracted to the idea of the mentoring relationship, and keen to follow a structured CPD plan that would allow me to explore all areas of museum work, as well as specialise if I wanted to.

For me the AMA has had a real impact both personally and professionally. I have gained a real understanding of our sector and the impact that museums can have, as well as developing a strong and supportive network of colleagues and peers.

I have developed a more self reflective approach to my work, as well as invaluable project management skills. My critical understanding of sector issues has greatly improved, and I have become much more involved in lively sector debates.

Following a CPD plan has enabled me to focus and achieve my career goals, as well as to help justify training and development need to my employer.

As a result of undertaking the AMA, I have grown in confidence professionally which has helped me to secure a management role within museums. This is really exciting for me, as I will now have the opportunity to contribute more strategically to our sector, and share my skills and knowledge with others.

I would highly recommend the AMA to all museum professionals looking to progress their careers. It has allowed me to gain the skills and tools I needed to achieve that next step up.

The support I received from the MA, my mentor, and AMA support network was invaluable, and it’s been great to meet and work with so many talented people.
