Why do you volunteer?
I started volunteering for the Scottish Museums Federation because I wanted to connect with the sector outside work. I found that most museum-related things I did were directly part of my job and I wanted to branch out. I had met other committee members of the SMF in the past and thought it was a great organisation to take part in. It’s nice because while we do things that help others with their professional development, we also offer relaxed environments and activities to socialise.
What are the benefits of volunteering for you?
I have enjoyed meeting people from different parts of the country and connecting with them. In this role I am involved in learning and feeding back on sector issues and developments. In addition, I have been on maternity leave twice since joining the committee and have found that volunteering has kept me informed and sane during those times.
What has made it possible for you?
I have been able to volunteer in my capacity as president mainly because I have had the time to dedicate to the role. At times there is a lot going on with my personal and professional life, but I have been able to carve out the time. My place of work is also supportive, which is very helpful.
What would you say to someone who is thinking of volunteering over and above a paid role?
I would say that they need to understand their capacity. Some volunteering roles involve more commitment than others (several hours a month, years on a committee, etc.). Think realistically about what you can offer and what you can achieve.
