Our recommendations for peers or colleagues

Bullying behaviours are never acceptable. They may not constitute a bullying relationship, but they should always be challenged.

As a peer or colleague, you can engage or challenge on behalf of the individual, diffusing the situation and creating space for the individual to rest, think and respond.

  1. Read all relevant policies associated with bullying, including harassment, victimisation, grievance and whistleblowing
  2. Participate in relevant training and development, including respect and dignity, assertiveness and health and safety, where applicable
  3. Professionally challenge bullying behaviours however innocuous or infrequent when they are observed
  4. Reflect on your behaviours and identify whether they could be received as bullying; refer to the bullying behaviours
  5. Offer support, including being a witness if required, to individuals when you see bullying behaviours directed toward them
