Opportunity: Become an MA rep

  • Organisation: Museums Association
  • Location: Remote working
  • Closing date: 23.02.25

The Museums Association (MA) is seeking to appoint one new member representative for England: South East. In order to ensure a good geographical spread, we are prioritising applications from the East of England in particular.

The position is for a period of three years with the possibility of a second term.

The MA is a dynamic membership organisation that campaigns for socially engaged museums and a vibrant and inclusive workforce. Representatives are a vital link between the MA and its members and are champions of the organisation and its policies and values.

The role is unpaid, but there are many benefits you will get in return for your time and expenses will be reimbursed.

What we offer
  • An opportunity to develop your career and engage with colleagues across the UK.
  • A chance to contribute to the work of your professional association and reflect the priorities of your area.
  • A free place at the MA annual conference each year, worth £365.
  • A free place at one of our one-day conferences each year.
  • Your MA membership renewal fees covered during your term.
  • A free year paid towards your AMA or FMA.
  • Expenses reimbursed when you attend MA representative events and meetings.

Representatives are encouraged to champion the MA on appropriate national/regional committees and groups and to pass on information from the MA to members.

The skills and qualities required to be a representative include:

  • Strong awareness of, and interest in, MA policy at a local and national level.
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to speak at events and through media channels.
  • The ability and willingness to take time out to attend meetings.
  • The ability to communicate with members.
  • The skills to report feedback concisely and objectively.

Applicants must be current individual members. Successful applicants will have their renewal fees covered during their term as a representative.

The MA will keep all representatives informed on relevant initiatives, issues and activities on a regular basis, and will organise biannual meetings to brief representatives and to allow them to discuss their role collectively and with the MA. Expenses will be paid to attend this meeting.

You will be assigned a member of staff at the MA as your point of contact and to support you in this role. Online catch-up meetings will be scheduled to provide support and review progress towards agreed member engagement goals.

To apply please complete the application form and the equality and diversity monitoring form below and email to charlotte.eyles@museumsassociation.org by midnight on Sunday 23 February 2025.
