Morwellham Quay saved

Morwellham Quay, an open-air mining museum near Tavistock, in Devon, has been saved from closure after Devon County Council withdrew its funding late last year. The site has been bought by the owners of the neighbouring attraction, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, who plan to reopen the World Heritage site by September.

IWM explores revamp

The Imperial War Museum (IWM) in London has appointed the architect Foster + Partners and project manager Drivers Jonas Deloitte to develop a masterplan for new galleries and visitor facilities. The first phase is scheduled for completion in 2014 to coincide with the centenary of the start of the first world war.

Auction pieces withdrawn

Four Roman sculptures were withdrawn from an auction at Bonhams in London after Christos Tsirogiannis, a researcher at Cambridge University, uncovered evidence suggesting that they had been illegally excavated. Archaeologist Lord Renfrew told the Guardian that “such sales are maintaining London’s reputation as a clearing house for looted antiquities”. Bonhams withdrew the pieces from sale pending an investigation.

Museum artefacts looted

Five historic items have been stolen from Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire. The objects, which were housed in the National Trust property’s Eastern Museum, are made of silver and were acquired mainly by Lord Curzon, viceroy of India between 1889 and 1905. Anyone with information about the theft should call Derbyshire police on 0345 123 3333.
