The review of the Museums Association’s Code of Ethics is well under way. We are seeking sector involvement throughout the process. Hopefully, you will have contributed to our online survey, which sought to gather views from across the sector on how the code should be changed.
The responses have been vital in providing a diversity of views, which is essential to ensure the code is relevant, useful and usable in guiding everyday ethical reflection in the sector. The code was last reviewed in 2014-15 and since then there have been some big changes in the sector and wider society.
These include the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement; how museums can help achieve climate justice; the role of museums in addressing colonial legacies; questions around ethical funding; and the rise of digital technology.
We are keen to dig deeper into these themes through online consultation events. These events will run until the end of the year so please do come along and contribute to the discussion.
We will begin drafting a new version of the code in the new year and we will be providing further opportunities for you to give us feedback so keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more information.
